This expansive Massachusetts property consists of two repurposed pre-revolutionary war era barns that were relocated and combined into a single-family home in the early 2000s. While the ingredients were right, the home had a number of awkward and quirky design choices that prevented it from coming together into a cohesive whole. The goal of our renovation was to reconfigure and bring more natural light into the master suite and create more vantage points in and around the home to enjoy the expansive valley and mountain views.
Before, the spacious master suite felt dark and had a challenging layout with an angled half-wall in the center of the room for the bed. We enlarged the window openings to maximize visibility of the stunning natural views, then used barn wood salvaged from that work to extend one of the walls to make it large enough for a king size bed. Now it feels open and cozy with clearly defined zones for sleeping, lounging, and working. Our custom nightstands and desk in this room were designed to be a clean, modern reflection the old barn’s structure and joinery.
In the master bathroom we removed another half-wall and large built-in jacuzzi tub to enhance spaciousness and highlight the beauty of the high, exposed beam ceilings. The vanity was relocated to the opposite wall to allow natural light to bounce and play off the mirror to fill the room.
An enlarged window in the breakfast room and new outdoor kitchen and fireplace create even more opportunities for our clients to feast their eyes on the breathtaking views. Now, instead of simply being a converted barn, the property plays up its strong points and truly feels like home.
